How Chipless Timing Works with RaceOS – Participant Guide

Created by Daniel Scagnelli, Modified on Sat, 21 Jun at 12:31 PM by Daniel Scagnelli

Welcome!
Your upcoming race is using RaceOS for chipless GPS-based race timing. That means no timing chip or mat is required — your GPS watch will do the work!

How It Works:

  1. Register Your Device
You’ll receive an email and text from RaceOS with a link to connect your GPS-enabled watch (Garmin, Coros, Apple Watch, Suunto, etc).

  2. Race Day Instructions

    • Start your watch at the official starting line

    • Stop your watch at the finish line

    • Sync your device with its mobile app (e.g., Garmin Connect) after you save the activity

  3. Get Your Results
Once your activity is synced, RaceOS will calculate your time and send your results via email and text, including:

    • A link to your personalized results page

    • A link to the full race leaderboard

⌚ Supported Devices:

  • Garmin

  • Coros

  • Wahoo

  • Suunto

  • Polar

  • Apple Watch

  • Strava

  • Etc etc

What to Expect:

You’ll receive a few reminder messages before race day to make sure your device is connected and ready. These messages are sent by RaceOS on behalf of the race you’ve registered for.

How Your Data Is Used

We know privacy is important, and we take your data seriously. Here's how we handle it:

  • ✅ Used only for race timing
Your data is used exclusively for the purpose of timing your race and is not used outside of that time, nor is it shared.

  • ✅ You control what’s shared
When you connect your device, you explicitly grant permission to access only the activity data required to calculate your finish time.

  • ✅ Minimal data retention
We only store GPS data necessary to determine your start and finish time. Unnecessary data is not collected or retained.

  • ✅ Highly secure storage
Your information is encrypted and protected using best-in-class security practices.

  • ✅ You can disconnect at any time
Simply log in to your RaceOS participant portal to manage or revoke device access at any time.

Read our full Privacy Policy to learn more.
